Here we go! The first coffee of the year from Ethiopia has finally arrived! It is naturally processed and beautifully clean in the cup.
The Farm / Processing station:
Oda washing station is located in Uraga district of Guji zone, Oromia region. Uraga is well known for its high altitudes where the coffee grows in semi or even full shade of the native forests. Around 1800 smallholders deliver their cherries to this station. The farmers were paid 35% more for their cherries on this lot, than is this years average. Uraga offers a beautiful scenery as well as amazing cup qualities.
Variety:
This lot is made up of a mix of original Ethiopian varieties called Heirloom. This name can hide many hundreds to thousands of varieties of coffee plants. In Ethiopia, and in most other African countries, it is common for dozens to hundreds of small farmers and families to contribute to a single coffee lot. For generations they have owned coffee trees whose origin is unknown.
Processing:
After hand sorting, the cherries are spread evenly on African beds, where they are periodically raked and dried for about 20 days.
Our baristas notes:
The coffee surprised us when it comes to grinding coarseness. Compared to its predecessors it has to be ground much finer (about 21 clicks on comandante instead of the usual 26). Only 3 pours were the best for the V60. So we prefer less longer pours rather than more shorter ones. The coffee is very pleasantly sweet and beautifully balanced as we are used to with natural Ethiopians coffees. The Oda has a nice light tea-like character with dominant notes of wild strawberries and blueberries on the body. It is very drinkable. Perfect as a morning coffee and afternoon cup of coffee as well.
