This lot gets its name from the Uraga woreda in southern Ethiopia where the coffee is grown. The lot is comprised of coffee from 120-150 growers whose farms, typical 2-3ha, are situated on clay to loamy soil at 2,000-2,300masl. The coffee is grown under semi-shade alongside other crops such as enset (false banana), barley, maize, beans, and peas.Once delivered to the washing station, only the red ripe cherries are selected. The coffee is then dry processed – in part because there is a shortage of manpower to process it using the wet method which requires intensive labour, but also because this process has been found to enhance the taste profile of this coffee. The by-products of processing are turned into fertiliser which is distributed back to the growers to improve the soil condition.Abiyot Boru, the owner of the washing station, has been working to improve the facilities of the site and has plans to expand and implement different processing techniques. He is also involved in local social projects such as road construction and providing much-needed credit services to the growers ahead of harvest.
